Thomas McEwen

A Sumpter businessman who owned a freighting

company in Sumpter was the first Master of the lodge.

 

McEwen Lodge 125 AF&AM received our Masonic Charter from

the Grand Lodge of Oregon in 1905, the building was shared with

Alpine Chapter #82 of the Eastern Star.

The new corner stone was laid on our new McEwen Lodge building by

Grand Worshipful Master Joseph Jarvis of the Grand Lodge of Oregon

in 19?? and is shared with Alpine Chapter #82 of the Eastern Star.

 

In this era, about 1898, the City of Sumpter, Baker County, Oregon

was a busy town which catered to miners, loggers and ranchers alike.

The city was mostly destroyed by fire in 1917.

 

Gold Dredge at Sumpter, Oregon

This is the last of the gold dredge's, located at the Oregon State Park, that

was used in the valley on Powder River, which was retrieving gold from

the ancient river bed.
